How businesses were selected

The dataset contains 200 unique businesses reviewed during contractor research and outreach from July 29 to August 10, 2026, primarily serving Greater Houston. Only the initial record for each business was counted; follow-up outreach was excluded to prevent duplicates.

What was checked

The headline analysis first checked whether a clear standalone customer-facing company website could be identified. Where a website was found, the audit recorded concrete visible defects. Broader research fields can also document mobile action, performance, trust, architecture, and measurement signals.

What counted as a major defect

Examples included placeholder or unfinished content, stale information, duplicated sections, broken elements, visible builder or template remnants, errors, coming-soon content, builder-subdomain hosting, extremely sparse pages, cluttered navigation, or similarly significant presentation problems.

Limitations and interpretation

The sample deliberately concentrated on smaller independent contractors and businesses where digital opportunities were more likely to exist. The 62% finding describes this targeted sample; it should not be generalized to all U.S. HVAC and plumbing companies.
